The Adult Education Officers' Association is the representative body for VEC Adult Education Officers in Ireland
Within each Vocational Education Committee (VEC), the Adult Education Officer (AEO) leads a multi-disciplinary management team that is rersponsible for the development and operation of the county VEC Adult Edycation Service under the direction of the VEC Committee, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and/or the Education Officer (EO). Adult education team members may include Adult Guidance Co-ordinators, Adult Literacy Organisers, Back to Education Initiative (BTEI) Co-ordinators, Community Education Facilitators, Vocational Training Opportunity Scheme (VTOS) Co-ordinators and Youthreach Co-ordinators.

While helping adults increase their skill level in order to improve their employment prospects is a key concern for all VEC Adult Education Services, AEOs also strive to promote the wider and equally important social benefit of learning. AEOs work closely with a wide range of community and voluntary organisations to design and deliver new learning initiatives that support local community development, social cohesion, active citizenship and area re-generation. The importance of this strand of adult education activity is growing significantly as civic, social, community and voluntary organisations experience severe cutbacks in funding.
